Countdown to The Verve

Countdown to The Verve

The Verve, Rolling Stone no. 784, April 1998
This is merely a friendly reminder…
We are down to less than a month before The Verve play a highly anticipated show at The Ricoh Coliseum on Thursday May 1st. The show has been sold out for a while, but like any gig, there are ways to get tickets. Maybe you went to high school with someone who now works for a major label. Maybe your sister made out with Ashcroft’s brothers newphews neighbor. Or maybe, you’ve got a friend who has tickets but is being dragged to a wedding …read more

The Juno Cup Trash Talk

The Juno Cup Trash Talk

In the true spirit of Canada, the Juno Awards weekend features the Juno Cup. The Juno Cup is a hockey game featuring Canadian musicians and some top hockey legends.
Word is, that in the past, there has been some friendly trash talking between the musicians and the players prior to the game. Hockey (and Maple Leaf) legend Doug Gilmour might be the catalyst to the talking,
“We can’t take it easy on them. On the bus ride over they were already chirping,” said Gilmour. “We’ll have to have a little discussion with them on the ice.”
However, Blue Rodeo’s …read more

Radio 3 shot the feed through all the snow to us Canadians. The line-up was canuck heavy and featured….

Songs tough to shake…from your mind

Songs tough to shake…from your mind

I remember the Ongoing History of New Music with Alan Cross addressing this issue once. Why do certain songs get stuck in your head? Is it the vibe, the personal connection, or a specific mix of melody and hook? Regardless of the formula or tags given, they take over the mind and hold on for the long haul…sometimes years.
Here are some tracks that I’ve found myself singing and thought, “I haven’t heard that songs for ages, why the hell am I singing _____…”
I haven’t heard this song in years, but I find myself belting it out in …read more

Live Review: Xavier Rudd | Mishka – Danforth Music Hall

Live Review: Xavier Rudd | Mishka – Danforth Music Hall

Trying to explain Australian Xavier Rudd to people can be a tough task. He plays a bunch of instruments (including a selections of didgeridoos), he has a soft acoustic vibe, his shows offer incredible and unique lengthy jams and he never wears shoes – a full-time barefooter, claiming not to own or wear footwear.
Xavier Rudd was rounding out his last of three shows at the Danforth Music Hall – a great venue for a gig of this nature. The old theatre has padded seats, good acoustics and lends itself well to sing-a-longs.
Rudd flowed through his set …read more

Songs of the Week (listen here) | Joel Plaskett | Vampire Weekend | Black Kids

Another edition of the songs that paddled (or re-paddled) upstream and made their way into the top rotation.
This week, the songs seem to have a spring or summer vibe. As I add them to this post I’m listening to them and picturing summery stuff. When I listen to this acoustic version of Joel Plaskett’s Nowhere With You I picture lying in a hammock playing guitar. I picture driving with the top down in a convertible (that I don’t own) when I hear Oxford Coma. Maybe this is a good sign. Maybe spring will be …read more

Undesirable Artists to Swap Places With | Top few

A fellow friend and blogger Arjun at The Good Musician proposed the questions to a number of us bloggers, “what artists would you not want to trade places/lives with?”
A great question. I had to base my answers on a few criteria: I couldn’t immediately name the members of Nickelback one after another (it wouldn’t have made for a diverse list), I would consider everything – having to play a certain genre/CD all the time, personal life matters and career health.
So here were the ones that jumped into my head…
Flavor Flav – although fun for a few days, the …read more
