Saturday nights at the Shoe…I’ve had many a perfect Saturday nights taking in a show at the Horseshoe Tavern.

The Mahones – a pre-show street meat, 10 pints of Guinness, and a post-show street meat…brutal Sunday.

The Coast album launch party – great homecoming shoe…plenty of pints

The Droops – the best live Jimi cover of Fire I’ve ever heard

Tonight will be a great night at the Shoe – whether you are a Salingers fan, a curious newcomer to the group, or someone who just wants to hear solid live music, this show is an important one to see.

The Salingers will lead a strong lineup….the bill includes BELLEWOODS, JANE VAIN & THE DARK MATTER, ADAM BELL

Wednesday Night in Gigs | Kathleen Edwards | Scout Niblett

There are a few interesting gigs tonight in town. Here is a rundown of the one’s that stand out…

Kathleen Edwards with Justin Rutledge will be playing the Phoenix.
This is a great venue to see both these acts – intimate with great sound. Let us know how this one goes

Portland’s Scout Niblett will play the Shoe tonight.
The style is lyrical, trance, strange folk. Reminds a bit of Bjork. Here is a back cab session

Refresh the iPod with Music for Spring

The first Sunday of the year. Well, the first Sunday where the sun is out and for the first time in a long time I’m actually looking forward to going outside and doing something.

And for this special occasion, I feel I need to add a touch of spring to my iPod.

Here is what’s on deck…

First heard Hello Blue Roses climbing the chart on the CBC’s R3 30. Their MySpace page seems to be at a standstill because they only have one track added on there and it is very different from their chart friendly standout: Shadow Falls

Vancouver’s Mohawk Lodge delivers a must add to your iPod for road trips and summer socials. Their 2007 album Wildfires is ideal for setting the pace for your day and has enough on it with nice riffs and solid bass lines to evoke a ‘let’s fire up the barbecue and and crack a couple beers at noon’ type vibe. Good summer tunes.

Toronto’s Jane’s Party consists of four York University Jazz Performance majors. The sound of Jane’s Party (previously The After Party) is as unique as its members. With songs ranging from pop-rock to reggae to club beat, Jane’s Party is sure to make you dance no matter what music you love.

Jane’s Party will be playing The Opera House on April 10th and The Reverb April 30th.

A Handful of Tracks: Stars, Tokyo Police Club, Deers

There is so much good music floating around right now. All of your favorite indie podcasts, streams and programs are doing a year in review. Songs from earlier in the year are being listed, played and brought back into podcast and MP3 rotations everywhere. When you start listening to the various lists you realize what a great follow up this year was to the last with regards to the Canadian music scene.
