Saturday nights at the Shoe…I’ve had many a perfect Saturday nights taking in a show at the Horseshoe Tavern.

Album Launch: The Free Press @ The Horseshoe

THE FREE PRESS launch their debut full-length album ‘HALF TRUTHS & WHOLE LIES‘, at the Horseshoe FRIDAY JULY 11. Doors at 9PM. $8 at the door.

The Free Press’ have worked long and hard at preparing for the debut of their first full-length album, which is out independently this week.

This unapologetically-pop group goes against the grain in choosing to write songs about relevant political and social issues, matching the lyrics with an upbeat tempo and catchy hooks. It’s a refreshing take on feel-good music.

The band sets a good example of social responsibility; even the packaging of the new album is made entirely of renewable materials.

A bit about The Free Press…

Toronto’s The Free Press are a bold breakthrough in Pop music – a band that thinks as hard as they rock, or in the context of their live show, a band that entertains as much as they ask their audiences to think. Sunparlour Players at The Shoe | Listen Here

Toronto’s Sunparlour Players are playing a big show at the Horseshoe tavern on Thursday night. Whistles, organs, clarinets, Canadian folk rock n roll and spring in th air…this will be a great show. That is a prediction I am ready to stand by.

The band has won over fans all across the Country and quickly became a favorite of CBC Radio 3, while creeping up the R3 30. From CBC Radio 3,

Sunparlour Players..No question…a MUST SEE! These guys are so intense while playing kick drums, dobros, banjos, etc. And they sell preserves with their CDs! Honestly, this is ragtime, footstomp meets Arcade Fire plus the intense-strained face of Joe Cocker mid-grunt. Like AC/DC guest-starring on Little House on The Prairie. Holy Plow, look out!

Run With The Kittens at the Horseshoe | Promo Video

While driving home the other night I heard the Run With The Kittens interview on the Edge with Barry Taylor. As many of you know, I’ve been a Kittens fan for quite a while. Their weekly Tuesday night residency at the Cameron House is always worth checking out. Last summer they played the Toronto Beer Fest and Cameron’s Brewing 10th Anniversary Party. Quite simply, the band puts on a show…regardless of how many people there are in the audience.

Lead singer Nate Mills has the rocks to wail not matter what gig he’s hosting – Zellers parking lot, a bar out East with 10 people in it or a massive draw of entertained boozers at the beer fest. As far as putting on a show, these guys get it.

The band is playing a big gig at the Horseshoe Tavern on April 11th. The band made a promo video for the net.

NOW Toronto with Luke Doucet

I’ve always been a big fan of NOW Magazine. For the most part their music coverage of what’s going on in the city and beyond is solid. However, it’s their interviews that I especially enjoy. Interviewers don’t ask questions that are of interest to me, but the folks employed at NOW often pry answers to questions I would ask the artist myself. This is likey because the interviews are a few beers or other in.

For example, here is a great snippet from a great interview with Luke Doucet.

What club do you like to go to after a show?

The Dakota Tavern has the best vibe in town, and the music is great seven days a week. Nice people, good food and the kitchen is open late, too. That’s what it takes to get hipsters to enjoy blues and country music. (Ssshhh… don’t tell them that’s what they’re enjoying; they’ll leave.)
