The Ghost Busters theme song, performed ad nauseam. But whenever VanWyngarden or Goldwasser weren’t on a stage, the two wrote more-traditional songs together, with the aim of signing to a major label.

“We were this unknown band, but we talked a lot about selling out as soon as possible,” says VanWyngarden. Still, when Columbia Records came courting them last year, MGMT couldn’t bring themselves to take the process seriously. “We were really sarcastic when we met them,” VanWyngarden recalls. “They asked us for a list of dream producers, so we made one: Prince, Barack Obama, Nigel Godrich and ‘Not Sheryl Crow.’ ”

The band’s latest release, Oracular Spectacular has received pretty wild reviews. If you think the sound is a bit Flaming Lips-ish, it’s because Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann produced this offering from MGMT.

Good listen – enjoy.

Post from: Toronto Unplugged

This Weekend: Major Maker, The Salads, Tokyo Police Club

Music Pictures

Music in Toronto

Toronto Bands

Toronto Concerts

Toronto Venues

el_mocambo

horseshoe

nathan_phillips_square

ra_ra_riot

salads

steam_whistle_brewing

tokyo_police

Here are three reasons to get your move and shake on this weekend: Friday January 25 – Major Maker at Steam Whistle Brewing – $5 Saturday January 26 – The Salads at The Horseshoe – $10 Saturday January 26 – Tokyo Police Club at Nathan Phillips Square – free (bring a flask, it’s going to be a cold show) If standing in the cold at the Tokyo Police Club gig isn’t for you, head to the El Mocambo to check out RA RA RIOT, The Coast and the Virgins – $8.50 (doors at 9) Post from: Toronto Unplugged
Post from: Toronto Unplugged

Here are three reasons to get your move and shake on this weekend:

Friday January 25 – Major Maker at Steam Whistle Brewing – $5

Saturday January 26 – The Salads at The Horseshoe – $10

Saturday January 26 – Tokyo Police Club at Nathan Phillips Square – free (bring a flask, it’s going to be a cold show)

If standing in the cold at the Tokyo Police Club gig isn’t for you, head to the El Mocambo to check out RA RA RIOT, The Coast and the Virgins – $8.50 (doors at 9)

Post from: Toronto Unplugged
