U2 3D Film opens in Toronto on Jan 23

The first-ever live-action digital 3-D film, U2 3D is a unique cinematic experience that places viewers within the pulsing energy of a stadium concert given by the world’s most popular band.
U2’s The Edge joked about seeing himself on stage in this massive 3D format.
“It’s kind of horrific,” to see himself on stage in 3-D, said Bono. “It’s bad enough on a small screen. Now you get to see the lard arse 40-foot tall.”
Marrying innovative digital 3-D imagery and multi-channel surround sound with the excitement of a live U2 concert — shot in South America during the final leg …read more

Live Review: John Wort Hannam

Live Review: John Wort Hannam

On a random night last night, a few of us from the brewery decided to stop into the Cameron House to check out some sets.  As part of the Toronto City Roots Series, we were lucky enough to catch John Wort Hannam.
John played the back room at the Cameron House for an intimate and captivated crowd.  Listening to John play songs such as Wrecking Ball, Infantryman, and Sweet Sweet Rose it is no wonder he is one of Canada’s most promising folk musicians.
John Hannam captures attention through his traditional and clean guitar playing, but he  holds your attention with well …read more

Corin Raymond tonight at the Cameron House

Corin Raymond tonight at the Cameron House

Corin Raymond is taking the stage at the Cameron House tonight at 6pm..
Here’s a bit on Corin…
Corin Raymond is a young man writing old songs- not songs written deliberately in an old style, but songs that sound like they’ve been around a lot longer than Corin himself.
He didn’t grow up playing music or writing songs, but he grew up around words.
Edna St. Vincent Millay. Robert Frost.
Poetry. Words.
Corin’s songs are stories. They’re also bittersweet tunes sung with unadulterated joy. Equal parts heartache and hope. Tom Waits does that. John Prine does that. They don’t take themselves too seriously but they break …read more

Digital downloads in Canada increased 73%

Digital downloads in Canada increased 73%

According to Nielsen, Canadian sales of digital tracks in Canada increased 73%, well ahead of the 45% growth rate posted in the US. Digital album sales are up 93% in Canada while in the US they are up only 53%.

“This is great news,” said Canadian Music Creators Coalition spokesman Steven Page. “In fact, it is exactly the kind of news that we hope the government will consider when they work to rewrite Canada’s copyright legislation later this year.”
Major label representatives have consistently said that the only way the industry can survive is by making it easier to sue music downloaders …read more

No ‘iPod Tax’ for Canadians

No ‘iPod Tax’ for Canadians

The Canadian Federal Court of Appeal recently quashed a proposed levy on digital music players. The proposed levies weren’t cheap – $5 on each Memory Stick or SD card between 1GB and 4GB of memory, and digital audio recorder levies which top out at $75 for players with 30GB+ of space.
The Copyright Board of Canada argues that the extra tax is designed to compensate artists. The so-called “iPod Tax” would come in addition to existing levies on recordable media enforced in Canada, which are also meant to help compensate artists.
